What is March of Dimes?

  • The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health.
  • March of Dimes was founded in 1938 by Franklin D. Roosevelt, but was originally known as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
  • March of Dimes Mission: To improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

What Are Some Facts for March of Dimes?

  • Premature birth is when a baby is born too early, before 37 weeks of pregnancy; typical pregnancy last 40 weeks. More newborns die from premature birth than any other cause.
  • 1 in 8 babies are born too soon in the U.S.
  • 534,000 babies are born too soon each year
  • 45,250 preemies will be born this month alone
  • 13 babies will die today from complications of their early birth
  • Today, more than 1,400 babies in the U.S. will be born prematurely.
